IOA Membership Survey: latest statistics

More than half of the Institute of Acoustics’ 3000 members are employed in industry, commerce and consultancies, according to a recent survey.

The IOA is the UK’s professional body for those in acoustics, noise and vibration and has thousands of members across the globe working in a wide range of interesting fields including aerodynamics, engineering and underwater acoustics.

The breakdown shows that about 1800 work in industry, commerce and consultancies – similar to last year’s survey. Figures show that more than 400 IOA members are employed in education (schools and universities), research and development, while about 450 work in public authorities, for example as environmental health officers.

Apart from holding specialist conferences throughout the year on topics such as wind farm noise, the IOA also hosts regional branch activities, to socialise, network and discuss the latest information and research on acoustics, noise and vibration.

Of the IOA’s 11 branches, which take in Ireland, Wales and Scotland and areas throughout the UK, London Branch is the largest with 745 members; the Southern Branch has 479 members while Midlands has 419.

The Institute has specialist working groups, with expert advice given to aid the development of legislation in areas such as environmental noise and building acoustics. Some members participate in more than one specialist group.

More than 1500 IOA members are part of the IOA’s Environmental Noise Group; about 300 in the Electroacoustics Group; about 1200 in the Building Acoustics Group; more than 430 in the Measurement & Instrumentation Group; nearly one thousand are part of the Noise & Vibration Engineering Group; over 260 are in the Musical Acoustics Group; the Physical Acoustics Group has some 160 members; nearly 200 participate in the Speech Group and roughly 140 are in the Underwater Acoustics Group.
