London students create 'innovative pod designs'
A special coaching scheme at St. Olave’s and St. Saviour’s School in London resulted in students presenting “innovative pod designs” according to Institute of Acoustics’ Building Acoustics Group Young co-representative, Alex Krasnic.
Collaborating with the Construction Industry Council's (CIC) partnership with ConstructionSkills, Alex Krasnic and selected industry professionals, including architects, planners and engineers, were recently invited to participate in a Coaching Scheme at St. Olaves and St. Saviours.
Danna Walker and Hannah Collie of the CIC organised and coordinated a five-session workshop aimed at focusing young designers and engineers in pre-selection age groups on the development and construction processes for a relevant project.
Students were split into small groups of about four people, with each session identifying the key issues regarding the design, planning, testing, environmental impact and construction issues for a pod design at their school.
Alex, of ZBP Acoustics, was on hand to offer the students guidance for mitigating noise and vibration impacts to and from their pod designs.
Additional advice was provided regarding energy efficiency and sustainable design solutions for their pods.
Alex said that, overall, pupils presented some “innovative pod designs” which were improved upon on after each session, ending in a STIX session which tested the students’ abilities to construct stable, papier-mâché rod constructions.
“This invaluable Coaching Scheme put the students through their design paces and encouraged them to think ‘outside the box’ whilst at the same time considering a wide range of design, planning and construction issues,” he said.
The IOA would like to thank Danna and Hannah at the CIC for organising this very worthwhile construction industry Coaching Scheme and allowing the students to gain an insight in fundamental Building Acoustics issues.
