for Professionals in Speech and Hearing

A One Day Tutorial Workshop, jointly organised by the Centre for Human Communication, University College London and the Speech & Hearing Group of the Institute of Acoustics.

The workshop will be of interest to professionals involved in speech and hearing, including:
• speech and language therapists
• teachers of the deaf
• educational audiologists
• clinical audiologists

The workshops will demonstrate the issues involved in making recordings of sufficiently high quality for acoustic analysis of speech, for purposes which may include diagnosis and analysis of speech and hearing pathologies and other impairments.

Topics covered include:

• Fundamentals of making good recordings and storing data
• Practical considerations for the recording environment (room acoustics/noise)
• What you need to be aware of when making purchasing decisions
• Analysis of speech recordings, including producing and using spectrograms
• Measurement of formant frequencies, pitch and voice quality

The day will include plenary sessions, tutorials and “hands on” laboratory sessions led by experts in the field, including:

How to find Chandler House
UCL is situated in Bloomsbury, near the centre of London, close to the West End. It is well-served by a variety of public transport services. Chandler House is located in Wakefield Street, about 500m south of King's Cross and St. Pancras stations. It is not recommended that you travel by car, since no visitor parking spaces are available. Also Chandler House is located within the London Congestion Charge Zone.
