Changes and implications for design

at Building Design Partnership

After many years deliberating content, the second official incarnation of BB 93 was published in December 2014, with some surprising changes from the consultation document and the Acoustic Performance Standards for the Priority Schools Building Programme v1.7. This talk outlines the key changes for acoustic consultants practicing in the field, and considers the implications for design solutions. The following areas will be discussed:
- The context of the legislation that applies to building work for schools; with performance standards for refurbishments, when do Building Regulations and when do Schools Premises Regulations apply?
- New areas that were not previously considered include noise from equipment and window actuator noise.
- Assessment of internal ambient noise levels with ventilation and thermal comfort, and different classifications of ventilation systems.
- The “deemed to satisfy” method for calculating the provision of absorption in sports halls.
- Additional guidance for open plan areas.
