It would take several bookcases to contain all the textbooks on airborne acoustics and noise. One shelf would do for all the books on groundborne noise and vibration. It is acoustics, but not as we know it. Measurement of vibration may seem simple, but a measurement is only of use if it can be applied correctly to the purpose for which it is made.
When groundborne noise makes the last stage of its journey it becomes airborne sound, but usually it is of interest in rooms, and at low frequencies where diffuse-field room acoustics does not apply and wave acoustics must be used instead.
This talk will highlight fundamental issues such as choice of measurement location, the way of attaching the transducers to the medium, errors and uncertainty in the results, prediction of vibration levels in nearby structures, and effects of the vibration on a receptor, such as a human being or a sensitive item of equipment.
Attendance is free and everyone is welcome, but note that advance notification of attendees is required for BRE. Please email TimminsG@bre.co.uk to reserve your place at this event.
The meeting will be in the Innovation Park Visitors Centre at BRE and attendees should report there on arrival for registration.
