Andy McKenzie graduated from ISVR in 1981 and after 18 months overseas travel, including a spell working at Wilkinson-Murray in Sydney, Australia, completed his PhD in 1987. After 4 years alternating between further research at ISVR and working as a freelance noise-guy, he formed Hayes McKenzie with Malcolm Hayes in 1991 with the aim of specialising in noise from wind turbines at the time the first commercial sites were starting to appear. The business grew as the requirement for noise work on proposed, consented and operational sites also grew and the pair made a significant contribution to the way wind farm noise was, and continues to be, assessed.
It is now well over 23 years since the ETSU-97 assessment methodology, used across the UK for wind turbine noise, was published and, despite the publication of the IOA Good Practice to its use in 2013, its continuing use has been criticised extensively in some circles. In 2015 Andy co-authored a paper with Andrew Bullmore of Hoare on 'What could an alternative to ETSU-R-97 look like?' which was presented at both Acoustics 2015 and, the following year at a one day meeting in Birmingham. Andy intends to present an updated version of their suggestions to the Eastern Branch meeting on 26th September, to stimulate discussion, including taking account of developments in the world of acoustics and wind turbines over the last 3 to 4 years.
CPD Certificates will be available.
