Three of the best 2019-20 IOA Diploma projects undertaken at the London South Bank University (LSBU) will be presented. NTI-Audio UK managing director will present a prize to the winner of the 2019-20 best LSBU IOA Diploma final project award.

Please read below the abstracts of finalist projects to be presented at the meeting. 

1. Military aircrew are exposed to high levels of noise during their working days/weeks. Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations:2005, their employer has a duty of care for the aural health of their personnel. This study looked at the difference between noise levels measured both under the earcup of over-ear hearing protection and on the occluded side of in-ear comms devices in order to determine a transfer function for use in occupational noise risk assessments for military aircrew

2. At present, there is very little acoustic guidance relating to the effects that meteorological conditions can have on internal noise levels. Current UK acoustic guidance favours dry weather conditions with low wind speeds; however the UK only experiences these conditions for just under half the year, meaning that some residential buildings are failing to provide suitable internal noise levels during a large portion of the year. This study discusses what effects meteorological conditions can have on high-rise buildings.

3. An experiment was conducted in order to understand how the vibrational response of fibre reinforced concrete is influenced by fibre type and volume. The Coronavirus pandemic halted plans for physical impulse response testing, so finite element analysis software was employed with an aim to simulate these experiments remotely. The simulation model was validated against real data and the experiment found that the volume fraction of each studied fibre type can be optimised to achieve desired material and acoustic properties
