A Soundscape Approach to Create an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) for Transport for London's emerging electric bus fleet
Wednesday 24 March 2021, 2pm start, Via Zoom

The Southern Branch of the IOA invites you to join us for a presentation of the AVAS developed for Transport for London’s electric bus fleet, by Grant Waters and Eduardo Manzano Fontecha from Anderson Acoustics:

“Noise caused by the internal combustion engine negatively affects millions of people every day. The emergence of electric vehicles provides a path to a future without such a burden, but how does the removal of vehicle noise increase the risk of collision?

The United Nations ECE Regulation 138 requires that all electric vehicles must introduce an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System or AVAS. The regulation has criteria that allows for a wide range of possibilities. So given these possibilities, how should this AVAS sound? How can it avoid the negative effects of the sound of the combustion engine? How can it avoid clashing with other vehicle AVAS sounds in our future cities and be acoustic conspicuous? How can it have a positive impact on the urban soundscape whilst ensuring the safety of the most vulnerable road users?

As part of Transport for London’s bus safety programme, all electric buses will be fitted with an AVAS to work towards their Vision Zero strategy. Anderson Acoustics was appointed to oversee the creation and implementation of the AVAS ‘Urban Bus Sound’, a bus sound for all cities, not just London. The project brought many disciplines together and was a huge success. It is currently in Phase 2 to continue the roll-out across London and other cities.”

The event is free to members of the IOA, as well as to students and the public. As numbers are limited, to register for this event, please go to the registration page at:
