This seminar offers a unique opportunity to hear more about the background to some of the new proposals in British Standard BS 8233, which will shortly be out for public consultation.
The draft revision of BS 8233 includes several significant updates to align with current best practices in acoustic design. Key changes include:
- Introduction of Sound Exposure Categories (SECs) based on external sound levels, providing a clearer framework for assessing impacts on residential developments.
- Updated guidance on facade sound insulation requirements linked to SECs.
- New recommendations for mitigating overheating while maintaining acoustic performance.
- Expanded guidance on sound absorption in spaces, with proposed area to volume ratio requirements.
- Updated advice on designing for speech intelligibility in various room types.
- Incorporation of latest research on sustainable noise control measures.
- Revised sections on specific building types, including more detailed criteria for hotels, offices, and educational facilities.
- Greater emphasis on the health impacts of noise and designing for diverse occupant needs.
- Updated references to current standards, regulations and assessment methodologies.
These changes aim to provide more comprehensive and up-to-date guidance for acoustic design of buildings.
Meet the speakers
Dr David Hiller, Chair of BS 8233 drafting committee. David is an Associate Director with Arup. He has 37 years experience in acoustics, noise and vibration, having previously been with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) for 12 years. He has managed and undertaken a diverse range of infrastructure and buildings projects, covering building acoustics; environmental noise and vibration. David is currently Chair of Committee B/564, responsible for BS 5228 and BS 8233.
Jack Harvie-Clark, Managing Director at Apex Acoustics, has been researching noise and ventilation for dwellings since 2013. He was the instigator and a major author of the AVO Guide, and acoustic advisor to DLUHC for the acoustics in Approved Doc O. Jack and Ben have co-authored a proposal to revise the acoustic framework for assessing new residential developments, presented at Inter-noise 24 and IOA Acoustics 2024.
Dr Benjamin Fenech, Noise lead at UKHA, acoustics specialist with a special interest in the non-auditory health effects of sound and noise. Ben has been working in the field of acoustics for the past 20 years, starting in academia developing advanced acoustic measurement techniques before acoustic consultancy. Since 2013 Ben has been responsible for leading the UK Health Security Agency and its predecessor organisation’s work programme on the non-auditory health effects of sound and noise.
