Professor Hansell will talk about the University of Leicester work with the UK Health Security Agency noise team to quantify the health impact of transport noise in England at national and local level. They have found ~ 100,000 disability adjusted life years (DALYs) lost due to road-traffic, ∼13,000 from railway, and ∼17,000 from aircraft noise in 2018, where a DALY represents the sum of years of life lost due to premature mortality and years of healthy life lost due to disability. These figures have been referenced in the House of Lords Inquiry final report, quoted in parliamentary debates and used by transport regulators to speed up efforts to reduce noise from the strategic noise network. The work received the John Connell Innovation Award (informally known as noise Oscars’ in October 2024). Professor Hansell will also include an update on recent research from Leicester.
Anna Hansell is Professor of Environmental Epidemiology and inaugural Director of the Centre for Environmental Health & Sustainability, and of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Chemical Threats and Hazards at the University of Leicester. She leads on national and international studies examining health effects of environmental exposures, with particular research interests in air pollution and environmental noise. Her initial career was in respiratory (hospital) medicine and public health, completing a PhD in epidemiology in 2005.
