Joint London Branch & Speech and Hearing Group Evening Meeting

Audiology for Acousticians - A presentation by Graham Frost, Technical Consultant

Wednesday 14 March 2018 at 6 pm

WSP, WSP House, 70 Chancery Lane, London, WC2A 1AF

Although there are many disciplines within the specialty of acoustics, acoustics is, in general, regarded as the branch of physics concerned with the properties of sound and also that sound is understood by many to be something that can be heard.

It is perhaps appropriate therefore that, as acousticians, we revisit the acoustics of the ear itself and the use of acoustic stimuli in the assessment of hearing function.

This presentation will firstly provide a brief review of the anatomy and physiology of the human ear and an overview of its acoustic properties.

Secondly, the presentation will describe measurement procedures and the acoustic stimuli used in objective screening, diagnostic and clinical testing of the auditory pathway and hearing function. The measurement procedures described will include the analysis of middle ear and inner ear function.

The requirements for appropriate test environments, to enable these tests to be carried out, will also be discussed.
