A life in headphones: working as a forensic speech analyst
Jessica Wormald, J P French Associates & University of York

Recordings of speech and audio relating to crimes can come from a wide range of sources including: telephone calls to the emergency services, mobile telephone recordings, and covert recording devices. In many cases questions arise such as, who is the person speaking in the recording, is the recording genuine, what is being said, can the sound quality be improved? Forensic analysts are often consulted to address these questions and offer answers to assist the court and the legal system. This talk will introduce the different types of analyses undertaken and discusses some of the specific techniques used, including newer developments such as automatic speaker identification. The talk will be illustrated with examples from real cases.
