Sound Systems in Acoustically Challenging Environments
Peter Mapp, Peter Mapp Associates
Wednesday 5 August 2020, 2pm start
Via Zoom

The Southern Branch of the IOA invites you to join us for a presentation of sound systems, presented by Dr Peter Mapp of Peter Mapp Associates.

Sound systems play an ever-increasing role in our lives, ranging from entertainment venues and systems to providing information via public address systems at train stations and airports and the broadcast of life safety announcements in public and commercial buildings and spaces.  The talk will take a lightning tour through some of the acoustic and audio issues posed by environmentally and acoustically challenging environments and some of the techniques employed to achieve adequate speech intelligibility. These can range from the restrictions imposed by large spaces (and architects) to limitations of internet audio and video conferencing. The talk will be illustrated with numerous examples and case histories that Peter has been associated with over his 40-year career and may include some sneak previews of his current research.”

Dr Peter Mapp is principal of Peter Mapp Associates. He has designed and commissioned over 700 sound systems ranging from theatres and concert halls to cathedrals, train stations, shopping malls, museums, nuclear power stations and sports stadia. He is also well known for his research relating to the intelligibility of sound systems and improving the performance of assistive listening systems and deaf aid loops.

He is a member of several British and International standards committees and chairs IEC 60268-16, the standard for speech intelligibility measurement. Over the years Peter has collaborated with several university research departments and institutions and is currently visiting professor of acoustics at London South Bank University.

The event is free to members of the IOA, as well as to students and the public. As numbers are limited, to register for this event, please go to the registration page at:
