15-16 June 2022
Manchester Metropolitan University
This summer the UKAN+ Bioacoustics Special Interest Group will be hosting a hybrid in-person and online symposium over two days on the use of acoustics for long-term monitoring of biodiversity in the UK.
In the UK, the use of acoustics in biodiversity monitoring has traditionally focussed on a few taxa, bats and cetaceans, for which guidelines and protocols have been established. As the need for long-term biodiversity monitoring in the UK increases – with the advent of Biodiversity Net Gain schemes, changes to environmental subsidies and increasing popularity of rewilding, we host a symposium that aims to build on existing knowledge to establish best practice for monitoring of a broad range of taxa, including birds, amphibians, insects and terrestrial mammals, as well as how to incorporate ecoacoustic methods for monitoring entire soundscapes. We will bring academics, industry, government and non-governmental organisations together to discuss and establish guidelines on acoustic methods for long-term biodiversity monitoring in the UK.
Join us for a series of keynote talks, panels, workshops and discussions over two days in Manchester, or join in and contribute online:
Day 1:
Session 1: Hardware, Set-up, and Study Design. Chaired by Dr. Huw Lloyd
Session 2: Species-specific monitoring. Chair TBC
Evening poster and networking session
Day 2:
Session 1: Monitoring soundscapes. Chaired by Dr. Alice Eldridge
Session 2: Standards for acoustics in UK long-term biodiversity monitoring. Chaired by Carlos Abrahams, Baker Consultants
We also aspire to host an event friendly to early-career researchers and those new or yet to use acoustic monitoring – with the aim to encourage greater uptake in these promising methods. As such, we will also be holding parallel training events for part of each of the first 3 sessions, encompassing; (i) introductions to equipment, survey design and basic principles, (ii) undertaking acoustic analysis for target species, (iii) soundscape analysis using acoustic indices. We will also host a poster session in which ECRs can showcase their work.
POSTER SESSION
Please tick this box when you register if you are interested in presenting at the poster session on 15 June. Posters need not present research solely based on acoustic monitoring of biodiversity in the UK, but should have some application to it. Note that priority will be given to early career researchers.’
Please provide a poster abstract (max 200 words), please email your abstract to o.metcalf@mmu.ac.uk
In-person and online tickets are available – but free lunches and coffees are included for in-person attendees.
Discounts and travel-bursaries are available for ECRs and other concessions for in-person attendance from UKAN+
