About the speaker:

Paul Reynolds is CEO of FSD Active Limited, a company which is bringing to market our innovative AMD technology for controlling vibrations of building floors. He was previously an academic at the Universities of Sheffield and Exeter, where he led more than 15 years of research in this field. Paul has also been a regular consultant to industry in vibration serviceability and related areas, including dynamic testing and monitoring of a number of UK sports stadia and examining solutions to the London Millennium Bridge problem. He also holds an Honorary Professor position at University of Exeter. 

Meeting Synopsis
Vibration performance of floor structures has been a challenging issue for structural engineers for many years. It has become the dominant design criterion limiting the slenderness of many new structures and holding up the uptake of more sustainable materials and layouts. Structural engineers faced with vibration problems in existing buildings have also had very limited options for remediation.
Active Mass Dampers (AMDs) offer a step-change in vibration performance of floor structures by actively generating forces that counteract the vibratory motion resulting in huge reductions in response. The technology has been developed by our team through many years of academic research and FSD Active Ltd was created to commercialise this technology. Our CALMFLOOR AMDs are the world's first mass produced product of its kind for use in the control of vibrations in floors. 

This talk will introduce the technology and show how it can be adopted for both remediation of existing vibration problems and to facilitate more efficient and sustainable design in future projects, which is of crucial importance as we strive to deliver on Net Zero construction ambitions. The talk will also present some case studies where the technology has been commercially adopted.

Arise – ARU’s Innovation Centre is located at the North entrance of the ARU Chelmsford Campus and can only be accessed via the A1016 Chelmer Valley Road, onto Alan Cherry Drive.   

Alan Cherry Drive is located at the junction with the traffic lights on Chelmer Valley Road.

Alternatively, the venue is a short walk from Chelmsford main line train station.
