About the Talk
A pilot scale drone network for medical delivery is currently being developed for NHS Scotland as part of Project CAELUS. Noise is a key concern for the public acceptance of drone networks. There is a lack of empirical data on the human response to the sound of drones, particularly in the context of medical delivery. In this talk, we will describe how a set of validated online sound demonstrations have been developed through field surveys and a flexible analysis-synthesis approach. The talk will go on to describe how these sound demonstrations have been used as stimuli in an online listening experiment with over 700 participants designed to collect data on annoyance related to overflight and take-off operations. The experiment investigated the effects of drone-listener distance, ambient soundscape type, and operational context on annoyance. The results highlight the importance of considering contextual factors in the planning and assessment of drone operations.
