The hall has included two main assembly spaces since it was first constructed as Colston Hall in 1867-73. Owing to fires and changes in programming priorities, there have been three other versions of the main hall interior within the original masonry structure since then – 1899, 1936 and the 1951 hall known to many of us. The 2023 hall inserted into the historic shell added a second balcony and interior geometry that is influenced by 21st century concepts of acoustic design, operations and performance.
The choice of a transformed 156-year-old hall as our venue is intended to attract papers on the refurbishment and acoustical history of other halls and opera houses and the integration of 21st century presentation equipment, whether it be active electroacoustics systems or visual screens and lighting and how to balance the demands of different styles of concert.
Are these elements shaping typologies beyond the shoebox and vineyard halls?
We welcome you to submit papers on these topics as well as related submissions on the subjects of auditorium design and room acoustics.
