The IOA has contributed to the All Party Parliamentary Group for healthy homes and buildings White Paper that was published on 24th October 2018, entitled ‘Building our Future – Laying the Foundations for Healthy Homes and Buildings White Paper October 2018.’
Extract from page 10 of the report as follows:
‘The Institute of Acoustics explained that there are many areas where the shared responsibility of different government departments can impinge on the noise environment of people’s homes.
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has the overall policy responsibility for noise management but there appear to be times when their voice is over-ridden when policy is developed. One example is the granting of Permitted Development Rights when converting office accommodation to residential. This has led to homes being located in poor acoustic environments without any obligation to include appropriate building envelope insulation. The noise impact consequences of the policy have also adversely affected some nearby businesses, although an amendment to the relevant regulation last year has helped to address that particular issue.’
The IOA is widely quoted in the report with additional comments on pages 16 and 19.
