The Institute of Acoustics is delighted to announce the winner of the 2023 Secondary School Competition: after much deliberation, Clementine Bristow from Stamford Endowed Schools was chosen by the judges for her well written, precise and logical entry. The judges said the entries were as innovative and diverse as ever, making judging harder than ever!
Clementine was awarded her prize at the Noise Abatement Society’s (NAS’s) John Connell Awards at the Palace of Westminster on the evening of 25th October 2023, which were hosted by Sir Peter Bottomley, Member of Parliament for Worthing West and presented by Trudy Harrison MP, Under Secretary of State Defra.
More information about the 2023 competition, John Connell Awards and 2024 Secondary School Competition will be available in the January/February edition of the Acoustics Bulletin (available to IOA members). The IOA will also publish the article separately on the IOA website for public access.
Angela Lamacraft, coordinator of the IOA schools competitions*, says: “Huge congratulations to Clementine! She was up against some very good competition. It was great to see how inspired Clementine was by the IOA Secondary School Competition. A competition asking students to investigate the link between acoustics and bird numbers introduced keen bird watchers like Clementine to the concept of soundscapes and the importance acoustics can have on our environment. Clementine really enjoyed her visit to the Palace of Westminster and winning the competition is an experience she says she will never forget. What wonderful encouragement for other students!”
