The January/February 2020 issue of Acoustics Bulletin will be with members any day now in the post, and is available online. It is the first issue we have published using our updated and refreshed design in line with the IOA’s new look communications strategy.
Content includes:
- A list of international events for 2020 that you might want to visit
- How one member engaged with primary school children at Winchester Cathedral’s annual science festival (slinkies and air cannons were involved…).
- A report of the recent ‘Noise Oscars’ (the annual John Connell Awards, organised by the Noise Abatement Society).
- Most consultants who carry out building acoustics testing will be familiar with the use of tapping machines, but the article on page 30 considers the rubber ball testing method for assessing ‘heavy, soft’ impacts.
- On page 40, Professor Kirill V. Horoshenkov sets out the current impact of the acoustics industry to the UK economy and how research feeds into global markets.
- The technical contribution on page 49 discusses the human perception of sound and when unwanted noise coming from neighbouring premises may be considered actionable in law.
- The IOA Measurement and Instrumentation Group publish a report on page 58 of their recent one-day meeting sound sensing in smart cities, which included a presentation on ‘Tranquil Cities’ and the creation of the ‘Tranquil Pavement’ map of London.
The deadline for the next issue (March/April 2020) is 6th February at the latest please. If you have a technical article that you’d like to submit for consideration, please email the editor at nickyrwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk)
