The Southern Branch of the IOA invites you to join us on the presentation of the “Underwater Robots and their Acoustic Payloads - New Insights and New Opportunities” by Mr. Gwyn Griffiths (MBE BA MSc).
“Over the last twenty years the number of underwater robots in use has probably increased fifty-fold. That rapid growth can only have been justified because of the value put on the information they have gathered - for the robotic vehicle itself is merely a truck. Acoustic payloads of various types have been, and remain, one of the most important families of data-gathering instruments on underwater robots of all types.
Drawing on the pioneering work in research and academic establishments and companies in the South of England this talk summarises the different types of sonars used on underwater vehicles, how they have contributed new insights on fisheries acoustics, zooplankton distribution and behaviour, the physics of the upper ocean, the statistics and characteristics of sea ice and floating ice shelves, as well as enabling high resolution mapping of the seabed and even the near vertical walls of undersea canyons. Woven into this story will be other examples of underwater acoustic devices such as beacons for navigation and signalling.”
The event is free to members of the IoA, as well as to students and the public. As numbers are limited, to register for this event, please go to the registration page at:
