AECOM, the world’s premier infrastructure firm has signed up to an employer-led initiative which aims to support aspiring acoustic technicians. The first apprenticeship scheme for acoustics in the industry will be supported by the Association of Noise Consultants and the Institute of Acoustics as well as higher education bodies and universities who will provide on the job training for technicians.
The 24-month programme will offer those who are trying to broaden their skillset and enter the industry the chance to become qualified sound technicians. Technicians will also work alongside acoustic consultants and engineering experts to ensure they learn from their peers.
As part of the launch, AECOM held an event at their London, Aldgate office today to inform potential employers and education providers about the benefits of offering the scheme. Typically, companies who sign up to the commitment include specialist consulting firms for the built environment and electro acoustics industry.
With the new Acoustics Technician Level 4 programme, this apprenticeship will provide a new employment route for acousticians of the future and tackle the need for more technicians across a range of industries, This will also generate a competitive workforce and more diversity within the workplace. However, this can only happen if more businesses and higher education providers come on board and be part of creating a better future for our industry.
Allan Chesney, CEO of The Institute of Acoustics, commented: “The Apprenticeship provides a new route into acoustics that opens up the industry to young people at a time when there is a growing demand for acousticians of all levels. We look forward to welcoming the next generation into the profession.”
The working group behind the new apprenticeship recently won an award for promoting and facilitating entry to the acoustics profession. The Armstrong Next Generation Award was presented to the group at the John Connell Awards, which are organised by the Noise Abatement Society.
