Open plan offices are often complex, non-Sabine spaces.  Added to this, activities within them can be diverse and there is a need to accommodate varying levels of privacy and communication within the same floorplate.  Traditional methods of room evaluation (e.g. reverberation time) are therefore not the most useful descriptor and other factors such as those set out in ISO 3382 Pt 3 are more appropriate; however, the lack of agreed performance criteria to accompany descriptors such as Lp,A,S,4m, D2S etc. often make this difficult to use in design.  Since 2017 a group of Acousticians and public health representatives from across the globe have been working on a new ISO standard for Acoustic Quality of Open Office Spaces with the aim of providing an internationally-accepted methodology for designing workplaces, suited around activity-based working.

This one day meeting will explore the various issues surrounding the design of open plan offices and outline the key features of the draft ISO 22955 which should be available for public consultation in late 2019.
