Calculation of Road Traffic Sound Levels Outdoors

Outdoor sound level calculation methods and models are widely used to assess exposure to road noise. In the UK the Calculation of Road Traffic Noise 1988 (CRTN) or CNOSSOS-EU 2021 methodologies are commonly use for environmental impact assessments or strategic noise mapping respectively. This presentation will provide an overview of the calculation methods, implementations in calculation software, and use in modelling and mapping.

Simon Shilton is Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics with over 30 years of experience in environmental noise consultancy focussed on enactment and delivery of all aspects of the EU Environmental Noise Directive. Simon has extensive experience of environmental noise policy, measurement, modelling and mapping ranging from individual sites through to national coverage projects. He has led research into calculation methodologies and uncertainty, and is a member of two ISO working groups related to measurement and calculation of outdoor sound levels.
