Smart City and Public Health in a Southern City (Research Proposal)

Abstract

The talk will explain the idea of ​​investigating the link and importance of noise within the concept of "smart cities" in the far south of Chile (Patagonia - Estrecho de Magallanes), considering inclusion and sensory diversity in public spaces to inform and raise awareness about the impact of noise pollution, recognising the different types of vulnerability to noise.

The idea is to investigate physical interventions (architectural acoustics) with technologies and procedural policies for public areas, representing a modern approach to public health and noise pollution.

The talk will address important qualitative and quantitative factors that must be considered, including:

• The development of a brief questionnaire on sensory profiles from an ergonomic perspective to classify sensory needs.

• Dynamic acoustic zoning.

• Inclusive multisensory signage.

• Monitoring of road traffic, with special attention to urban public transport.

• Inclusive policies and training to generate protocols for allocating spaces and access rights. 

Bio

Christian Toledo Veche, is a specialist in Industrial Hygiene and Noise Pollution. 

‘I have worked in various sectors related to industrial and environmental noise, including forestry, transportation, the petroleum industry, green hydrogen, methanol, construction and quarrying, electricity, wildlife, and other related areas.
I have 16 years of experience as a Risk Prevention Engineer specializing in occupational health and the environment. I am a certified Industrial Hygiene and Noise Pollution Technician, and I also hold a master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene and Risk Prevention.

Some of the major milestones I've had the opportunity to develop and participate in include:

2015 Creation of PV Asesorías SpA, a company dedicated to managing and advising businesses on occupational health and environmental issues.
2021 We conducted the first qualitative study on occupational vibrations through SUSESO at the national level.
2022 We began refining our digital modelling skills through INOISE, a Dutch company that uses the ISO 9613 and CNOSSOS.EUcalculation methods, which are mandatory in the European Union.
2023 We were awarded contracts related to the petrochemical industry, focusing on ergonomics and physical agents. We also updated our equipment and technologies to ensure the successful achievement of our objectives. 
2024 We were awarded a noise and vibration research project on the impact of new industries in the Magallanes region through the Ministry of the Environment in conjunction with the University of Magallanes (GEA).
2025 We are currently investing in new technologies, such as the acquisition of a hydrophone, and our lead advisor won a scholarship to pursue a PhD in physical agents at UNINI University (Mexico). ‘
