‘Dog Kennel Noise – An Integrated Assessment Methodology'. This is an in person event only

The difficulties surrounding the assessment of noise impact from dog kennel and boarding facilities is an ongoing issue in the industry.

In 2024 we were approached by our client, who was proposing to build a small number of homes directly adjacent to an existing dog boarding kennel through conversion of existing buildings.

Although guidance is currently published and is under review, there is no industry standard method for assessing the noise from dog kennels. We decided to undertake some research in to how we could address this issue, in this particular instance, and evidence how a suitable acoustic environment could be achieved.

We looked at appropriate ways of defining and characterising barking as a noise source, assessing against appropriate internal noise criteria during the night and daytime. Our final approach incorporated a number of pieces of guidance, which we feel resulted in a well-rounded and robust assessment.

This talk is a brief case study where our own assessment methodology was applied in the absence of any guidance.
