Summary:
Acoustics practice and standardisation have often prioritised 'normal' hearing, resulting in a gap in understanding regarding how environments are experienced by an aurally diverse population. With multi-speaker environments as a focus, this research explored speech intelligibility for autistic people and how it aligned with ISO 12913-2 soundscapes assessment metrics. The results are discussed within the context of what is already known about autistic listening, as well as the wider field of aural diversity.
Speaker Bio:
Ryan Gamblin graduated from Birmingham City University with a first-class BSc (Hons) in Sound Engineering and Production, conducting this research for his undergraduate dissertation and presenting it at IOA Acoustics 2025. He now works as a graduate acoustic engineer at Buro Happold/Vanguardia, with a continuing interest in soundscapes and aural diversity-centred design.
