A new Bill proposing that fireworks noise levels are restricted was introduced by Yasim Qureshi, Labour MP for Bolton South and Walkden, on December 3rd. The Bill proposes five measures: a maximum noise limit for fireworks sold to the public, clear noise labeling, council powers to make targeted time-limited rules in areas with repeated problems, give councils the power to issue civil penalties, and require the Secretary of State to review the impact of firework noise on veterans, neurodivergent people, people with certain medical conditions and animals, ensuring that future policy is based on proper evidence. The second reading of the Bill is on January 30th. This comes following a steady stream of questions in parliaments from MPs in England and Wales relating to fireworks noise, controls and impacts. The issue has also been raised in Scotland, where local authorities have the power to designate firework control zones.
