The IOA Eastern Branch are hosting another hybrid CPD meeting. Open to both IOA members and non-mbers. Come along in person and say hello or log-in remotely.
Low frequency sound from electrical transformers presents a risk of noise impact for nearby residential communities. Transformers generate a characteristic “hum”. This low frequency noise source requires specific mitigation measures to effectively control this risk. Stephen Ninham from UK Power Networks will present details on how this noise is generated and controlled. Case studies will be used to highlight effective and not so effective noise management strategies.
Current planning policy on providing new homes is that strategic policies should "makes as much use as possible of previously-developed or ‘brownfield’ land”. This results in the potential conflict of bringing proposed new homes close to existing transformers and the associated “hum”. If not appropriately assessed at planning stage this can result in complaints and enforcement action.
Noise data from the existing network has been used to provide an open source GIS noise mapping tool. This identifies areas where noise could be significant for new development. This information can be made available to Local Authority planning officers/environmental health officers as well as property developers and their consultants to enable an accurate objective assessment of the noise effects and required mitigation. Case studies and recommendations in relation to planning conditions are also discussed.
CPD Certificates will be available. There is no need to book. Please direct any questions about the meeting to:-
