The Irish Branch of the Institute of Acoustics is delighted to announce a special technical webinar featuring two speakers from NASA, offering members fascinating insight into acoustics research, technological innovation, and aircraft noise mitigation at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Acoustic Research at the NASA Langley Research Centre Established in 1917 in Hampton, Virginia, the NASA Langley Research Centre has played a pioneering role in acoustic research, particularly in aircraft noise generation, propagation, and mitigation.
Over several decades, its research has advanced our understanding of aeroacoustics, aircraft engine and airframe noise, sonic booms, sound transmission and psychoacoustics.
Through specialised acoustic laboratories, wind tunnels and human response studies, NASA Langley has investigated both the physical characteristics of aircraft noise and how it is perceived by people.
This research has significantly contributed to quieter aircraft, improved noise prediction methods, innovative noise-reduction technologies, and a better understanding of aviation noise’s effects on communities.
Guest Speakers Sidd Krishnamurthy – A Brief History of Psychoacoustic Testing at NASA Sidd will provide an overview of the history and development of psychoacoustic testing at NASA Langley, exploring how researchers have investigated human responses to aircraft noise and how this research has contributed to our understanding of noise perception and annoyance.
Chris Shoemaker – Aircraft Engine Noise Mitigation Chris will discuss acoustic technologies developed to mitigate aircraft engine noise, highlighting the innovative research, engineering solutions and technological advances aimed at reducing noise emissions from aircraft propulsion systems.
About the Event Together, these presentations will give Irish Branch members a unique opportunity to gain insight into the remarkable breadth of acoustics research at NASA, from understanding how humans perceive and respond to sound to developing advanced technologies that make aviation quieter.
This promises to be a fascinating, informative session that showcases outstanding scientific research and engineering innovation at NASA and its contribution to the wider field of acoustics.
