Abstract
Monitoring the sound field of a space can be helpful to describe the ambient levels and can often be accompanied by operations intended to distil those data into single figure weighted values representing the space. However, how does one identify and analyse specific events in that data – events that may occur tens, hundreds, or even thousands of times over the monitoring period? Addressing this challenge was a large focus of the research feeding into the project Wind-induced creaking noise in tall buildings, yet the principles identified are applicable to other event-hunting-style analyses across the discipline. Using creaking in tall buildings as a technical foundation, Dr Alec Korchev will discuss the challenges around recording and managing large datasets, large scale content filtering, maintaining accuracy in automation processes, and how one may interpret the results.
The talk will be followed by a short Q&A session.
Bio
Dr Alec Korchev is a Senior Specialist Consultant and head of the London office for Clarke Saunders Acoustics. His doctorate, completed just this year, focuses on Wind-induced creaking noise in tall buildings and considers the mechanisms involved, measurement and assessment protocols, mitigation measures, as well as predicting the likelihood of creaking in new tall buildings. Alec sits on the Board of Directors at the Association of Noise Consultants and the IOA London Branch Committee. Alec’s proudest achievement this year was getting married, and he will definitely not try to sneak some photos of the wedding into this presentation.
