The Southern Branch invites you to a first event on underwater acoustics in a while. We are joined by Adam Wooley from Thales who will share with use of sonar and their practical applications. It promises to be a very interesting event! The paper on which this presentation is based has been attached to the event for more information.
Thales Underwater Systems are a world-leading sonar provider for naval forces across the globe. Their comprehensive range of sonar systems provides enhanced situational awareness in diverse marine environments, supporting and enabling effective naval operations in anti-submarine warfare and mine countermeasures.
A key aspect of such marine environments is the sound speed profile (SSP), which describes the spatial variability of the speed of sound underwater. The SSP can change significantly over the course of a mission, and so real-time updates in the SSP are indispensable for effective sonar operations. Reduction in environmental uncertainty can improve target range, bearing resolution and overall sonar performance.
In this presentation, we explore the use of Ocean Acoustic Tomography with Principle Component Analysis for estimating the SSP using acoustic data in simulated scenarios.
Adam Woolley is a University of Salford graduate, a Chartered Engineer, and a member of the IOA who has worked for Thales since 2018. His experience in sonar includes underwater acoustic transducers, arrays, signal processing, and propagation modelling. Adam has worked on projects ranging from proof-of-concept R&D to high-maturity system delivery in both anti-submarine warfare and mine countermeasures. Within the IOA, Adam is a former secretary of the Early Careers Group committee and a former early careers rep for the Underwater Acoustics Group committee. Since 2022, Adam has been studying part-time for a PhD on Inverse Methods for Sound Speed Profile Prediction with the University of Southampton.
As always, the event is free to members of the IoA, as well as to students and the public. CPD certification will be offered for attendance, wait for the QR code that will be shown/shared at the end of the presentation.
