 DEAF AWARENESS IN A TECHNOLOGICAL ERA

 Sheetal Athalye and Suzanne Harrigan (The Ear Foundation)

The Ear Foundation is delighted to welcome the Midlands Branch of the IOA to their new “SoundSpace” building.

Hearing loss currently affects 10 million people in the UK and is set to rise in the next 20 years to an estimated 14.5 million. Hearing loss, gradual or sudden, can have a significant effect on people’s ability to access spoken communication, so vital for daily life.

During this session, Suzanne and Sheetal will talk about;

  1. The impact of hearing loss
  2. The current hearing technologies
  3. Good communication strategies and an improved listening environment
  4. The work of The Ear Foundation

Following the talk, there will be an opportunity for you all to have a look at the equipment in the hearing technology suite- a state of the art resource centre which enables those with hearing losses to try out assistive devices for themselves.

The Ear Foundation brought cochlear implants for children to the UK in 1989 and now provides services which bridge the gap between the clinics where these exciting technologies are fitted and the local community where they are used in everyday life. It offers a family programme, lively and topical research and education programmes as well as clinical services.  To find out more visit their website at www.earfoundation.org.uk

Attendance is free and everyone is welcome. Given that The Ear Foundation is a registered charity, voluntary donations are encouraged and there will also be a raffle. Places are limited so please confirm your attendance to carys.hill@aecom.com.  CPD certificates provided. Any queries please contact Carys.

Following the meeting, the discussion is likely to continue in a suitable Indian restaurant.  All are welcome to attend. Please let Carys know in advance so that we can make a reservation.
