Presentation Overview
For a number of decades now the automotive industry has placed end user perceived Sound Quality at the center of their approach to acoustic design. Over the years this work has led to the development and widespread application of a number of methodologies, including binaural recording & accurate auralisation, auditory jury tests and the characterization of technical sounds by means of psychoacoustic derived analysis parameters.
This human perceptual centered approach to sound design is not unique to automotive but can now be found across a number of other industries. These range from product design manufacturers (e.g., home appliances, personal care, power tools etc.), Telecommunications and most recently in Architectural and Environmental acoustics. The growing interest in the latter has been reflected in the publication of the ISO-12913 Acoustics – Soundscape standard. Specifically in part - 3, “Data analysis”, the ISO standard lists a number of recommended analyses including time and frequency weighted Levels and psychoacoustic derived parameters such as Loudness (ISO532-1), Sharpness (DIN 45692), Totality Hearing Model (ECMA-74), Roughness (Hearing Model) & Fluctuation Strength.
Whilst the use of time and frequency weighted Levels is well established, the newly proposed psychoacoustics parameters may be not be familiar to all acoustic practitioners. This presentation aims to introduce the principles of a Sound Quality centered design approach and the basics of the psychoacoustics predictors presented in part 3 of the ISO-12913. The content of this presentation is directed to those new to this type of acoustic analyses.
Head acoustic`s equipment will also be demonstrated after the talk.
Dr Miguel Garcia Pedroche has been an Applications Engineer for over 5 years at HEAD acoustics UK Ltd working for both, Sound Vibration and Perception (SVP) and Telecoms departments. In his current post he helps companies across varied industries to address Sound Quality and acoustics challenges. Prior to HEAD acoustics, besides other positions in industry, he carried out research in the field of Beamforming and Aeroacoustics as part of his Doctoral thesis at the Mechanical Engineering department in Trinity College, Dublin. Miguel also holds a bachelor’s degree in acoustics from Southampton University (ISVR).
