Midlands Branch Evening Meeting and AGM
An Acoustic Reconstruction of the House of Commons c.1820-34
Aglaia Foteinou, University of York
Wednesday 8 March 2023 - 6.00 for 6.30 start
Hybrid Meeting, University of Derby (OL1), Kedleston Road, Derby DE22 1GB
and Zoom

Dr Aglaia Foteinou (PhD, MIOA) is working as a Research Fellow in XR Stories. In the last year, she was working as a Research Associate on the EU JPI-CH PHE: The Past Has Ears project as a member of the UK team, at the University of York. Before joining this project, Aglaia was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton for eight years. She has collaborated on a variety of national and international projects related to acoustic modelling and impulse response measurements of heritage sites. Her work has been presented at several national and international conferences.

The talk will present her recent work on the acoustic reconstruction of the UK House of Commons in the 1820s. The chamber is a theatre for confrontational political performance, speechmaking and parliamentary debate. The interior of the Commons chamber had undergone multiple changes since its conversion from St Stephen’s Chapel in the mid-sixteenth century; this presentation will focus on the last stage before it was severely damaged by a fire in Westminster Palace in 1834 and demolished in 1837. Considering the importance of this building shaping the history of the UK, and the political speeches and decisions that took place within it, Dr Foteinou’s research considered the acoustic characteristics of the space and aimed to understand more about its impact on history.

Commercial software (CATT Acoustic and ODEON) was used for the simulation while the design was based on the available historical elements and further experimentation on the acoustic characteristics of the model. The decisions made for this reconstruction will be discussed and acoustic results will be presented.

The meeting will be preceded by the IOA Midlands Branch AGM which will be extremely brief.

The event is free to members of the IOA and the public.  Please register for the event at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/an-acoustic-reconstruction-of-the-house-of-commons-c-1820-34-and-agm-tickets-530287473107 if you are planning to attend in person.
