About the Talk

Speaker: Simon Jennings, Limerick City and County Council

The Irish Branch of the Institute of Acoustics is pleased to host a lunchtime session exploring the emerging field of soundscapes—a shift from traditional noise control toward a more holistic understanding of how people experience sound in place.

Drawing on Limerick’s work following its EU Green Leaf Award 2020, Simon Jennings will outline how the soundscape approach is being applied in practice in Limerick, from early research influences on pilot projects and future opportunities.

Key Themes

  • Reframing Sound: Moving beyond noise metrics with insights and collaborations from early work such as the Hush City Framework.
  • Standards & Training: Application of the ISO and Institute of Acoustics (IOA) training in shaping a local authority approach.
  • Pilot Project: DECC pilot study funded under the Environmental Noise Regulations and development of a soundscape framework for Quiet Area suitability.
  • Case Studies: The beginning of applying the soundscape framework in practice in Limerick.
  • Looking Ahead: Presenting Limerick’s direction of travel to embed soundscape thinking across public realm projects, green research initiatives, planning policy and future noise action planning.
