Jian King Citation for the Rayleigh Medal

CITATION FOR JIAN KANG FOR THE RALEIGH MEDAL

Jian Kang was appointed to his first professorship in acoustics at Sheffield University; more recently he took up the post of Professor of Acoustics and Soundscape and Head of the Acoustics Group at University College London. He has now worked in the acoustics field for 40 years, with over 80 research projects, 800 publications, 90 engineering consultancy projects and 20 patents. His work on acoustic theories, design guidance and products has brought major improvements to the noise control in underground stations and soundscape design in urban areas. He is a recipient of the prestigious Advanced ERC Grant Award, currently working internationally on developing Soundscape Indices.

In education, as well as lecturing in acoustics to architectural students and others, Jian has supervised numerous PhD and MSc students in his acoustics group.

Jian is President of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration; he also chairs the European Acoustics Association Technical Committee for Noise and the EU COST Action on Soundscape of European Cities and Landscapes. He was awarded IOA Tyndall Medal in 2008, the Peter Lord Award in 2014; the NAS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and the CIBSE Napier Shaw Bronze Medal in 2013. He is Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics and also of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and he is a Member of The Academy of Europe.

For his prodigious contributions to Environmental Acoustics and, in particular, the behaviour of sound in the built environment, the Institute of Acoustics is delighted to award the Raleigh Medal to Professor Jian Kang.
