About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE POWER OF EMPOWERMENT.

Environmental Health at Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where passionate and expert professionals go above and beyond for their communities every day.

Natasha started her career in the NHS. She came to Westminster to do more for vulnerable people. When a family in her community reached out to her after their heating was cut off, Natasha took their situation seriously. Living in terrible conditions, and reaching desperation, they had nowhere else to turn. Natasha stepped in, holding the landlord to account and getting them to improve conditions for the family. These are the moments that make her the proudest. Now, she uses her expertise and experience to empower others.

The Role:

As an Environmental Health Officer you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s success. Our Public Protection and Licensing service works to ensure that every one of our residents, businesses and visitors enjoys a clean, safe and quiet city, and when you join our Proactive Noise Team you’ll respond to complaints relating to residential, commercial and street-based noise, odour and light pollution. Harnessing your knowledge of environmental health policies and legislation, you’ll work to make our borough a healthy and peaceful place to live, work and visit.

Carrying out routine or unannounced visits and inspections to ensure compliance with legislation, and taking action to improve conditions through engagement and education, you’ll deliver a fair and informed response to complaints and concerns from our communities, resolving issues in a timely and efficient way. Ready to take enforcement action if necessary, and with the expertise to initiate legal proceedings and prepare and give evidence in court, you’ll be committed to promoting the integration of environmental health principals throughout our organisation, and providing expert guidance to businesses, residents and visitors.

Always ready to respond quickly to concerns raised by our communities, prioritising those that have the highest impact, and resolving complex and recurring complaints, you’ll take a proactive interest in identifying areas of risk to the public, educating people on the impact of their actions and where necessary, working to stop negative behaviour. Taking a positive approach to ensuring compliance, and helping businesses and individuals meet regulatory requirements, you’ll use your knowledge of environmental health to safeguard standards and peoples’ health. We’ll also expect you to undertake project-based work that focuses on improving the systems, policies and procedures we use to deliver a first class service.

About You:

To be a success in this busy role you should have well developed experience of working in a customer-facing role, responding to written and in-person complaints relating to environmental health issues, and the ability to develop trusted relationships. Your skills of tact and diplomacy will allow you to deescalate conflict effectively, and use education, advice and regulatory powers to effect positive change. It’s important that you have experience of working alongside a range of agencies and professionals to deliver an outstanding service and improve public health, and you should also be capable of gathering information to support legal action and court proceedings.

Your excellent interpersonal skills will see you responding to emotionally challenging situations calmly, and you’ll have the ability to explain legislation and procedures clearly while underlining the consequences and penalties of non-compliance. An empathetic listener with the confidence to work in the community with minimal supervision, you’ll also be capable of influencing behaviour by sharing knowledge and outlining consequences, and be ready to make quick decisions on how to achieve compliance and reduce risk.

A skilled writer of correspondence and evidence, and able to plan and manage your workload to agreed targets and standards, we’ll expect you to have good IT skills, with a particular focus on the Microsoft Office suite of software. Willing to use handheld technological devices to record information and respond to customers while out in the community, you should also be prepared to develop your environmental health expertise, ensuring your knowledge is up to speed by undertaking training, refresher courses and continual professional development, and sharing this expertise with your colleagues. We would also prefer you to have a degree or diploma in Environmental Health or hold a similar relevant qualification.
