Considerations of noise and soundscape are embedded in the Natural Resources Wales State of Natural Resources Report 2025.
Considerations of noise and soundscape are embedded in the Natural Resources Wales State of Natural Resources Report 2025. Publication of this information is required the year before each Welsh Parliament election. The report acknowledges noise pollution in Wales is a public health concern, with 25% of residents reporting being affected, especially in urban areas. The new Welsh legislation on soundscapes is referenced as aiming to improve well-being by promoting healthier, more inclusive acoustic environments. Also, it is recognized that the impacts of underwater noise are likely to extend with increasing marine industrial development. Messages in the report include the need for noise mitigation for healthy urban areas, and that addressing air and noise pollution in Wales requires a multi-sector, collaborative approach that integrates nature-based solutions, sustainable transport, and emissions control across various industries. Following the advice in the Noise and Soundscape Plan for Wales 2023 to 2028 – particularly when planning new development that may impact on the relative balance between noise and natural sounds where people live, is seen as a key opportunity for action.
