The first issue of Acoustics Bulletin for 2023 is available for Members online and will be with members shortly in print.  Apart from all the regulars, it includes these articles:

• We publish the results of the IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control in 2021/2022. The prize for best overall Diploma performance, based on not only gaining five merits but also achieving the highest aggregate marks on three of the modules is to be awarded to David Robinson (DL Edinburgh).
• Our research article in this issue comes from Dr Theodosia Stratoudaki of the University of Strathclyde. She writes that the current challenges in Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) stem from the increased use of advanced materials and manufacturing processes that push the limits of materials’ performance. NDE techniques need to cope with extreme environments, restricted access and complex geometries. In order to address these, a new ultrasonic capability is being developed for real-time, remote ultrasonic imaging. This will be achieved by introducing a conceptual change to phased array ultrasonics by adapting the array to the demands of the inspected structure, on the fly.
• The IOA has allocated money for members to attend acoustics related training and activities and to provide some financial help to carry out acoustics-related STEM activities. The Chair of the Bursary Fund, Reena Mahtani, explains how to apply.
• The IOA Sustainable Design Task Force has been rebooted for 2023 with one goal in mind – to ensure acoustics practitioners have the knowledge and tools to incorporate sustainable thinking to their day-to-day work. Read more on page 44.
• Starting on page 54, we celebrate the career and lifelong service to acoustics, of IOA Past President, Tony Jones.
• The technical article in this issue is by Dirk Wehowsky and Siegfried Muehlbachler, of Getzner Werkstoffe GmbH. They explain how efficient vibration isolation reduces airborne noise.
• There’s plenty more, but if you feel there are gaps in Acoustics Bulletin and you’d like to see articles on other subjects such as research, book reviews or acoustics in medicine, for example, please contact editor, Nicky Rogers at nickyratwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk)

Just to remind you about our technical articles. Although they are not peer reviewed, they all go through an internal checking process via the IOA Publications Committee and their panel of volunteer experts. This is intended to highlight any discrepancies in the articles, or areas that may need clarification, which are then referred back to authors for amends.

The deadline for the next issue (March/April 2023) issue is Monday 6 February 2023 at the very latest please. If you have a technical article that you’d like to submit for consideration, please email the editor at nickyratwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk) at any time.
