The January/February 2024 issue of Acoustics Bulletin is now available to members and, apart from all the regulars, it includes these articles:
- This is the issue where we start to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the IOA. So sliding back to the 70s, where it all began, some founder members share their fascinating memories (starting on page 37). At the end of 2024, we plan to publish a compilation of all the 2024 anniversary articles in a special souvenir supplement, so if you have any memories of the Institute that you’d like to share please email the editor at nickyr
warnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk) at any time.
- On page 16 of this issue, we have the IOA annual conference (Acoustics 2023) report, compiled by Martin Lester. It was a packed programme and, luckily for members who were unable to attend, or who just want to re-visit a certain presentation, it is all available at https://www.ioa.org.uk/catalogue/conference-proceedings/acoustics-2023-winchester-16-17-october
- We have all the IOA Diploma results for 2023/23 starting on page 32. There’s also a list of project titles, some of which are decidedly ‘niche’
- There was yet more cause for celebration at the ‘Noise Oscars’ (the Noise Abatement Society’s John Connell Awards), which took place last October. One of our own, Alec Korchev, from Clarke Saunders Acoustics, won the John Connell Rising Star Award. The IOA sponsored the Innovation Award, and the IOA Schools Competition is also marked at this event, so see the full report on page 60.
- Everyone knows that dogs have acute hearing; slightly rustling a crisp packet in the next room will bring a deeply sleeping dog straight to heel, but the research article in this issue discusses noise-induced hearing loss in dogs and inter-breed differences in sound sensitivity, all vitally important, especially in assistance dogs.
- How annoying is it when someone driving a supercar (or what they like to think of as a supercar) revs it up as they drive past at a rate of knots? Well, on page 65, you’ll see that drivers in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea may be about to get their comeuppance.
- Lastly, on page 68, the IOA ‘kitsches’ it up in Christmas jumpers – all for a good cause.
- There’s plenty more, but if you feel there are gaps in Acoustics Bulletin and you’d like to see articles on other subjects please contact the editor, Nicky Rogers, at nickyr
warnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk)
Just to remind you about our technical articles. Although they are not peer reviewed, they all go through a rigorous internal checking process via the IOA Publications Committee and their panel of volunteer experts. This is intended to highlight any discrepancies in the articles, or areas that may need clarification, which are then referred back to authors for amends.
The deadline for the next issue (March/April 2024) is Tuesday 6 February 2024 at the very latest please.
If you have a technical article that you’d like to submit for consideration, also please email the editor at nickyrwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk)
