The September/October 2022 issue of Acoustics Bulletin is available to members digitally and it includes these articles:

  • Following the IOA AGM, held on Wednesday 24 August 2022, Stephen Turner handed over the Presidency to Alistair Somerville, so in this issue Alistair reflects on the challenges of the past two years and sets his stall out for what might be coming his way.
  • The Instrumentation Corner article in this issue discusses how instrumentation specification standards can contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It has been written by Susan Dowson, who is Convenor and UK member of several groups within IEC/TC29.
  • Just in case you couldn’t get, we have a report on the International Conference on Underwater Acoustics (ICUA) 2022, which was held in June in Southampton, UK.
  • Glenn Leembruggen brings us part two of his technical article that looks at the relationships between frequency response and the speech transmission index, with respect to word scores and road tunnels.
  • The IOA is working to establish an All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Noise, Sound and Health – to provide a forum for discussion on these topics and measures to manage them. If you want to be involved, turn to page 25 for more details and your support would be very welcome.
  • Professor Emeritus Nick G Pace died recently. Nick transformed many lives in his professional journey, helping people realise their potential and helping science progress at the same time. In this issue, we publish a tribute to him that was written by some of his colleagues.
  • The International Year of Sound is a global initiative to highlight the importance of sound and related sciences and technologies for all in society. Dr Paul Lepper was on the IYS 2020 coordinating committee and, in his article on page 28 he reports on some of the events that helped it become such a success.
  • The IOA Early Careers Group (ECG) needs to recruit IOA Student Representatives from universities and IOA Diploma Centres, so has formed the Student Representative Working Group. If this is something you’d be interested in, go to page 34 where we explain exactly what is involved.
  • There’s plenty more, but if you feel there are gaps in Acoustics Bulletin and you’d like to see articles on other subjects such as research, book reviews or acoustics in medicine, for example, please contact editor, Nicky Rogers at nickyratwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk)

Just to remind you about our technical articles. Although they are not peer reviewed, they all go through an internal checking process via the IOA Publications Committee and their panel of volunteer experts. This is intended to highlight any discrepancies in the articles, or areas that may need clarification, which are then referred back to authors for amends.

The deadline for the next issue (November/December 2022) issue is Monday 10 October 2022 at the very latest please. If you have a technical article that you’d like to submit for consideration, please email the editor at nickyratwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk) at any time.
