Following a review of Energy National Policy Statements in 2021, the UK Government is consulting on further amendments, which they say will strengthen the process for delivering major new energy infrastructure. The statements apply to England and Wales, and these updates are expected to speed up planning, whilst protecting and enhancing the environment and ensuring local views are accounted for.  The IOA responded to the previous consultation, welcoming overall comprehensive acknowledgement of acoustic issues, and highlighting some areas where wording could be clarified. In its new draft of EN-1 Overarching National Policy Statement for Energy, now takes account of the Welsh Government Noise and Soundscape Action Plan. EN-3 (renewables) and EN-5(electricity networks), both have detailed sections covering noise and vibration impacts. This consultation follows on from the publication in March of an action plan for speeding up Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIP).

For Offshore Wind Environmental Standards, EN-3 states that in 2023 Defra will consult on guidance on the design, construction, operation and decommissioning of offshore wind farms.

The consultation closes 25th May.
