Forthcoming IOA Certificate Courses in Autumn 2024
Subject to recruitment, the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) will be offering the following Certificate courses in Autumn 2024, on Workplace Noise Risk Assessment, Environmental Noise Measurement and Building Acoustics Measurements.
Certificate of Competence in Workplace Noise Risk Assessment (CCWNRA):
Dr Rachel van Besouw, FIOA, HM Specialist Inspector of Health and Safety (Noise and Vibration) at the Health and Safety Executive says: “Noise reports are being collated and reviewed as part of phase one of HSE’s multi-year Workplace Noise Intervention. During phase two, HSE Specialist Inspectors will be using this evidence to target poor performing consultants.
Regulation 5(1) of The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 requires employers to carry out a risk assessment if any employee is likely to be exposed to noise at or above a lower exposure action value. This duty falls on the employer and cannot be delegated to a noise consultant, although the services of the latter may be required in order to undertake a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. Regulation 7(1) of The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 also places a duty on the employer to ensure that any persons appointed to carry out tasks involved in risk assessment are competent to do so. Noise consultants have a legal duty under Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSWA) to ensure the services they provide do not put others at risk”.
This 5-day course aims to provide the education and training needed to carry out workplace noise assessments in a competent manner, as required by the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005. Demand for competent noise exposure assessments is increasing and this course provides those registering with the latest information and training to meet the demands of the legislation. It is designed to provide a background of basic acoustics combined with `hands on' practical experience of industrial noise measurements and associated assessment of workplace noise exposure.
Spaces on the CCWNRA course in September are available at four centres: Blue Tree Acoustics, (Sheffield), KP Acoustics Research Labs (Southampton), Make UK (Birmingham), Shorcontrol Safety Ltd (ROI). Currently all centres still have some spaces available on their course.
Exam date: 27 September 2024
Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement (CCENM):.
This 5-day course, which is the most popular of the certificate courses, seeks to provide delegates with a basic knowledge of the methodology of environmental noise measurement, including the use and accuracy requirements of sound level meters and analysers and to enable them be aware of the significance of measurement data against the framework of standards and legislation for environmental noise.
Not only is there a newly accredited centre Noise Training SW in the Bristol area, but also London South Bank University will be running the course again as their second delivery this year in Autumn 2024. Other Centres running the CCENM course in September / October 2024 are: Acoustic Associates (Peterborough), Bel Noise Courses (Scotland), Colchester Institute, KP Acoustics Research Labs (Southampton),), Shorcontrol Safety Ltd (ROI) and the University of Derby.
Examination date: 4 October 2024
Certificate of Competence in Building Acoustics Measurement (CCBAM):
This 5-day course provides a basic knowledge of the methodology for measuring and reporting sound insulation and aspects of room acoustics, together with relevant provisions of key standards and guidance.
Centre: KP Acoustics Research Labs (Southampton)
Examination date: 1 November
Certificate course in Soundscape Assessment
The next issue of the Acoustics Bulletin will mention, a new 5-day Certificate course in Soundscape Assessment that will enable attendees to understand the concepts of soundscape and undertake the assessment and data analysis required for a soundscape assessment.
