New UK wide guidance for noise and vibration management for environmental permits

The Environment Agency (EA) has issued new guidance for noise and vibration management, replacing:

  • Environment Agency Horizontal Guidance for Noise (H3) parts 1 and 2
  • Scottish Environmental Protection Agency Guidance on the control of noise at PPC installations

The new guidance, Noise and vibration management: environmental permits, applies across the UK for the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NEIA), as well as the EA.

Environmental permits have conditions requiring operators to control pollutants, including noise and vibration. This new guidance aims to help holders and potential holders of permits apply for, vary, and comply with their permits, covering:

  • how the environment agencies will assess noise from certain industrial processes
  • what the law says must be done to manage noise and vibration
  • advice on how to manage noise – in particular, how to carry out a noise impact assessment and what operators should include in a noise management plan
