The new Government plan launched to put drivers back in the driving seat, includes supporting the roll out of noise cameras to target unacceptable vehicle modifications. The report states that government will “Issue guidance to local authorities setting out minimum requirements and best practice for the use of noise cameras, sharing the findings of recent trials of this equipment.” It is acknowledged that noise from traffic is a health risk, saying: “we may have heard loud – often modified – vehicles shattering the peace. The World Health Organisation recognises environmental noise as one of the top environmental health risks in Europe. It may cause sleep disturbance and annoyance, and there is growing evidence that long term exposure to high levels of environmental noise is associated with illnesses like heart attack and stroke.”

Last year the IOA published a briefing outlining how noise cameras operate, the legal framework for noise from vehicles on the road, research into noise cameras and knowledge gaps to be filled.
