An initiative to trial noise cameras for tackling excessive vehicle engine and exhaust noise was announced in April 2022 by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, and in October four areas for trial were announced – Bradford, South Gloucestershire, Great Yarmouth and Birmingham.

This issue is a concern to the public, as a poll in February 2022 found 71% of those asked support noise cameras in cities, and over two thirds (67%) support them in rural areas. The Department for Transport (DfT) then invited MPs across England and Wales to submit applications to trial new noise (acoustic) cameras where excessive noise from modified vehicles is a problem. Those trials are now being rolled out.

This new IOA briefing outlines how noise cameras operate, the legal framework for noise from vehicles on the road, research into noise cameras to date and knowledge gaps to be filled to enable cameras to be used successfully in enforcement to reduce excessive noise impact.
