The November/December 2022 issue of Acoustics Bulletin is available to members and, apart from all the regulars, it includes these articles:

  • If you didn’t make it to Inter-noise in August, where more than 100 technical sessions covered a wide range of issues facing the industry, the research community and the community at large, don’t worry because we bring reports of a selection of sessions.
  • In our new research column, we find out how sonic (audio and ultrasonic) sensing deployed on autonomous robots will revolutionise the way the one million kilometres of buried water pipe network in the UK is inspected and managed.
  • More research, this time from HSE on lower noise, vibration and dust solutions for angle grinding. Hand-held angle grinders are widely used across many sectors, and real-use Hand-Arm Vibration (HAV) measurements on angle grinders show upper quartile values in the range 7-9 m/s² (HSE L1401). This means that there can be a risk of ill health for operators regularly using these machines for more than 20-40 minutes per day.
  • IOA has added two new courses on writing and critiquing acoustics-related technical reports: The Certificate of Proficiency in Technical Report Writing (CPTRW) and the Advanced Certificate of Proficiency in Technical Report Evaluation (ACPTRE).
  • Read about Dr Philip Harrison’s presentation to the IOA Southern and London Branches joint meeting in September 2022, where, using two notorious examples, he discussed speech and audio forensics – the application of various aspects of linguistics, phonetics and acoustics in legal investigation and proceedings.
  • Apprenticeships ‒ the Acoustics Engineering Technician Apprenticeships Trailblazer Group has announced that the first cohort of apprentices have started at London Southbank University.
  • Instrumentation Corner in this issue covers single partition comparison of a PA speaker with an omni-directional dodecahedron speaker.
  • The main technical article is about environmental acoustic criteria for sustainable developments ‒ starting by asking ‘what do we mean by sustainable acoustics?’

There’s plenty more, but if you feel there are gaps in Acoustics Bulletin and you’d like to see articles on other subjects such as research, book reviews or acoustics in medicine, for example, please contact editor, Nicky Rogers at nickyratwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk)

Just to remind you about our technical articles. Although they are not peer reviewed, they all go through an internal checking process via the IOA Publications Committee and their panel of volunteer experts. This is intended to highlight any discrepancies in the articles, or areas that may need clarification, which are then referred back to authors for amends.

The deadline for the next issue (January/February 2023) issue is Thursday 1 December 2022 at the very latest please. If you have a technical article that you’d like to submit for consideration, please email the editor at nickyratwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk) at any time.
