The September/October 2023 issue of Acoustics Bulletin is now available online for members and includes these articles:

Everyone will remember when Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, caught fire in April 2019 resulting in catastrophic damage. Now, with acoustic measurements, acoustic models, and extensive archival research, acousticians are reconstructing the sounds of the building through the ages. It’s the fascinating cover story so see page 48 to find out more.
On page 26, we have the first part of a two-part series about onshore wind turbine noise and a review of the current guidance framework for the UK Government. (Part two will be in the next issue).
We have a great article on page 56 about ‘The Rest is Just Noise’ monthly podcast that was set up by Doctors Andrew Mitchell, Francesco Aletta, and Tin Oberman in the depths of the pandemic. You may have listened to it, but have you heard Dr Hasina Begum’s special series on women in acoustics?
The Instrumentation Corner article goes a bit ‘extreme’ and focuses on how to accurately measure the sound of gunfire at a shooting range.
The research article on page 44 of this issue considers silica aerogels for vibro-acoustic applications. Porous materials are the most common class of acoustic absorbers used in noise control applications but there’s a relatively new product on the acoustic absorption market ‒ silica aerogels ‒ which combine outstanding thermal insulation with high acoustic absorption across a broad frequency range.
The women and STEM article on page 18 discusses a report published earlier this year which found that 115,000 more girls will need to study A Levels in maths or physics (or both) to equal the number of boys studying engineering and technology degrees. But, on a positive note, there are several things members can do right now to help improve this situation, they are all set out in this article.
There’s plenty more, but if you feel there are gaps in Acoustics Bulletin and you’d like to see articles on other subjects please contact the editor, Nicky Rogers, at nickyratwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk)

Just to remind you about our technical articles. Although they are not peer reviewed, they all go through an internal checking process via the IOA Publications Committee and their panel of volunteer experts. This is intended to highlight any discrepancies in the articles, or areas that may need clarification, which are then referred back to authors for amends.

The deadline for the next issue (November/December 2023) issue is Monday 9 October 2023 at the very latest please. If you have a technical article that you’d like to submit for consideration, please email the editor at nickyratwarnersgroup.co.uk (nickyr[at]warnersgroup[dot]co[dot]uk) at any time.
