General Principles of Acoustics Module
The General Principles of Acoustics Module (GPA) lasts the longest since it introduces all of the ideas, definitions and concepts that are needed for subsequent course work.
It is a first introduction to topics such as:
- The Fundamentals of Sound
- Sound Propagation
- Sound Measurement
- Sound Absorption
- Sound Insulation
- Noise Indices
- Noise and Vibration Control
It covers topics that are pursued in more depth in the Specialist Modules.
Unit 1 (covering basic concepts and principles) and Unit 4 (covering sound propagation) are longer than the other Units.

Laboratory Module
The experiments for the Laboratory Module depend on the facilities at your chosen learning centre for centre-based candidates or the chosen Lab School for distance learning candidates.
You have to carry out all of the experiments recording the raw data, and any example calculations in the Laboratory Notebook provided.
You can gain up to 10 marks for a thoroughly completed Notebook.
You will have to write up 4 of the experiments as full reports.
Only the best 3 report marks count in the final mark for the Module which has to be 50% or more to pass.
The notes for the Laboratory Module explain the expected format of the laboratory reports and contain the associated marking scheme.
The laboratory note-book can contribute up to 10 marks. Note that to obtain a Merit on the Laboratory Module you will need a mark of at least 7 out of 10 for the notebook as well as 70% or more for each report.
